The Thyroid Storm

Sometimes undiagnosed, untreated people with hyperthyroidism suddenly go into a medical crisis called a thyroid storm.

A thyroid storm occurs when something triggers the thyroid gland to start producing massive amounts of thyroid hormone. The trigger can be an infection, a trauma or accident, surgery (not necessarily to the thyroid gland), a blood clot, or complications from another condition such as diabetes or pregnancy. Going into labor can trigger a thyroid storm in a pregnant woman (but this is rare because pregnant women are screened for thyroid disease).

In a thyroid storm the usual symptoms of hyperthyroidism ramp themselves up to extreme levels. Instead of merely feeling hot, the person in a thyroid storm may spike a 105°F (41°C) fever. Instead of being anxious and moody, the person in a thyroid storm may be psychotic. And instead of operating at faster speeds than usual, the internal organs, including the heart, may simply fail. A thyroid storm is a life-threatening emergency. Fortunately, it is rare, because hyperthyroidism, even though it can be hard to diagnose, is nonetheless usually detected before it reaches such extreme levels.
